February 4, 2009: De Koninck
Belgium, Belgium, Belgium. For your average Joe, Belgium means nothing more than a politically neutral country that can't decide one official language. For the beer lover however, Belgium conjures up images of choirs of angels descending from heaven. There are so many brilliant brews that have come from this little country nestled between Holland and France that sometimes it seems impossible. How can so many quality beers come out of a country that is roughly the size of Los Angeles County? Few Countries in the world can boast the proud brewing heritage that Belgium can, and I've come to expect a lot from every Belgian beer that I've tasted.
De Koninck is up on the agenda tonight, and I've been looking forward to this one ever since I saw the sexy little bottle sitting on the shelf. De Koninck is an amber colored top fermented ale, and like my beer from the 2nd of February is made from hops that come from the Saaz region of the Czech Republic. Particularly light for an amber ale, De Koninck had all the earmarks of quality that I've come to expect out of a Belgian product. My only real criticism of this ale is that the taste seemed to ebb off toward the end, making for a less than remarkable finish to the beer. De Koninck doesn't have the reputation of its belgian compatriots like Stella Artois, Chimay or Affligem, but it's definitely close in terms of quality. This one comes highly recommended from yours truly, but with a word of advice; be sure to savor your glass of De Koninck, but don't dilly dally. If you take too long with to drink it you may be less than impressed with the end result, but it's absolutely a worthy ale.
Op uw gezondheid and A votre sante!
